At Ruffing, there is an athletic schedule of Middle School interscholastic games in coed soccer and both boys' and girls' basketball to provide experience in organized team play, but also to strengthen the qualities that team membership develops. Emphasis is placed on skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship and learning to put forth one’s best effort both during practice and in games.

Basketball
The basketball teams are coached by a staff member. Although the basketball team is primarily for Seventh and Eighth graders, Sixth graders often join in order to learn basic skills and the team practice routines. Basketball practice is held before school (7:30 to 8:15 a.m.) on Monday and Wednesday for girls, Tuesday and Thursday for boys. The focus is on skill development, teamwork and concentration. Ruffing's teams are competitive members of the Eastern Independent School League.

Soccer
In recent years, soccer has been coached by a parent volunteer coach. With after-school practices, soccer generally plays a fall schedule of six games. Skill development, ball handling and position play are emphasized in practice, while games give players the opportunity to fine tune skills and to work as a team to implement plays.

Archery
Ruffing’s Archery team competed in the first annual Ohio Arnold Archery Competition of the National Archery in Schools Program in Columbus in March 2007. The team of 20 was formed through the physical education unit on archery and includes boys and girls from Fourth through Eighth Grade. Ruffing’s program was inaugurated by a staff member who is a certified international target archery instructor, using the school’s competition-quality archery equipment.
