A foundation for lifelong learning

Children ages six through twelve become increasingly aware of the world around them. Their intellectual curiosity and imagination fuel their constant appetite to understand the universe and their place in it. They are becoming more social and interested in others.

The inclusive, integrated Montessori curriculum begins in the lower elementary with explorations of the origins of the Earth, of life, and of the development of human communities, language and mathematics. Children’s innate desire to learn is sparked by the presentation of great concepts and the opportunity to independently pursue an interest to the child’s own satisfaction. The use of concrete, manipulative materials enables children to grasp concepts, rather than memorize facts. Further exploration is encouraged by regular interaction with nature--gardening, outdoor study, camping--and by taking advantage of the wealth of community resources available in the Cleveland area and beyond.

Since disciplines, including geography, language, mathematics, history, science, Spanish, art, and music are intertwined, the lower elementary child develops basic skills within a meaningful context. Reading practice, for example, includes stories of human dwellings throughout history or animal descriptions in zoology or drama activity cues for parts of speech in language. The Montessori curriculum and freedom within structure allow for each child to develop her/his own potential at her/his own pace.

Lower Elementary establishes solid study and research skills for the greater depth of the Upper Elementary.
