The Ruffing Montessori Middle School is a safe and supportive environment for children entering adolescence. High standards of conduct guide our inclusive community, which is focused upon a meaningful and challenging curriculum. Middle School classes and activities operate in a positive atmosphere, requiring appropriate social skills and shared community values.

Our small group classes are participatory, often conducted in seminar format, allowing for the exchange of ideas. Assignments are varied, purposeful, and designed to help students develop skills applicable not only to the next step of their education, but to the real world. An emphasis on creative and clear writing on many levels, both in coursework and in programs available outside the school, prepares our students to excel at this essential skill. In addition, careful instruction in mathematics aligned with inquiry-based science classes, several offerings in foreign languages, art, music, physical education and interscholastic sports programs ensure a rich and comprehensive experience for each student.

Middle School at Ruffing includes ongoing interaction with the surrounding world. Students have the opportunity for both extended and local travel, cultural experiences, and mini-course electives and participate in a continuous program of community service. Both appreciation for and acceptance of others are integral to the program.

Middle School graduates almost always attend the high school of their choice and have excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities at independent, parochial, and public high schools
