The right environment: safe, secure, and orderly
The Ruffing Toddler Community is more than a mere classroom; it is a home away from home for children ages 18 to 36 months. A true Montessori environment, prepared specifically for them, it is a
nurturing social community where very young children can learn and grow individually and also participate in a cooperative group with other children.
The beauty of this environment is that it is ordered, secure, and safe, yet actually stimulates and entices children to their work. The pervasive feeling
of joy in the Toddler Community--as in all Montessori environments--has its roots in the freedom within structure that is appropriate to the
children’s developmental abilities.
Toddler Community
For the 14 children enrolled in our Toddler Community, each day presents opportunity for strengthening language skills, refining gross motor skills, developing fine motor skills and encouraging independence. The classroom is a beautiful Montessori environment, bathed in natural light and prepared specifically for the very young child. Under the warm guidance of two Montessori-trained toddler teachers, our children engage in practical life pursuits, such as gardening, dressing, cooking and hand washing, as well as reading, puzzles, art, music and conversation. Independence is fostered by allowing the child to choose from a variety of
activities that he or she can accomplish with success and that are necessary for life. The daily practice of these activities enhances the child’s ability to
communicate with confidence, move with grace, and develop self-reliance.
Due to the robust interest in our Toddler Community, resulting in a significant wait list for the 2010-2011 academic year, we have closed the application process for the fall of 2010. We are, however, accepting applications for the 2011-2012 school year. We remain truly grateful for your interest and welcome any questions that you may have.
As the child reaches 3 years, a transition to the Children's House begins.
