Ruffing’s summer camp, Summer Ruffing It, is in its 30th year of fun, educational, inspiring and creative programs
enjoyed by children from throughout the greater Heights community. For six weeks each summer, campers participate in the following program tracks:
- A Summer to Grow On is open to children from 3 to 6 years old. Six weeks only. A typical day offers time for stories, songs, movement
activities, food preparation, art projects, sharing lunch together, and occasional guest presentations and performances. Outdoor activities include weekly
nature walks, gardening, and playing on our new pre-school playground equipment. Content and specific activities are based on the interest of the child and
follow Montessori theory in regard to the child’s developmental needs.
- Creative Arts & Sciences, for children in grades 1 through 5, offers campers the opportunity to create personalized schedules based on individual interests from a large menu of classes. Three or six week option. . We offer classes in art, athletics, dance, media, music, science, writing and other
skills. Campers enjoy working with anything from clay, pens, paints, cameras, and soccer balls, to running relays, building a parade float, climbing a rock
wall, dancing, making puppets, rehearsing skits, playing in a jug band, interviewing, acting, writing a script, looking through microscopes and sending
rockets soaring!
Extreme SRI, Grades 6-8 will explore local, urban, rural sustainability projects in Greater Cleveland. "Let us design it" and we did. Students in our 2009 program helped design a series of six weekly morning classes. We will offer in depth looks at the urban and rural Cleveland environment. Three or six week option. Afternoons when not on off site adventures you spend in one class of your choosing: moviemaking, stage performance, creation of a video news show or playing sports. During the morning sessions, students move on and off to campus to get a close look and hands on experiences with green sustainable projects. Beginning with Week 1 Drama/Improv with Children's Theatre Director, Margo Haas, where we learn about each other through skits and humor! Week 2 we visit sustainable projects promoted by GreenCityBlueLake. Week 3 we visit a local community farm where solar power is harnessed to irrigate to create enough food for a full year for 30 families. Campout under the stars, ride a horse and visit a bio and fuel cell technology business. Week 4 is a workshop in metalworking with former parent and master craftsperson, Deborah Spinell. Week 5 students visit cyber world for identifying sustainable communities and linking with global projects. Week 6 is the completion of a final DVD project to summarize the learning.
