Metal cutouts of geometric figures in individual metal frames used as templates develop hand/eye coordination, control of a writing instrument, encourage a lightness of touch and teach the correct pencil grip in preparation for handwriting. A lesson in coffee grinding is a treat for the senses, combining the rich aroma of the beans along with the satisfying effort of both hands working together to transform the whole bean to the fine granules. This hands-on work uses fine motor skills and teaches executive functioning by involving a multiple step process while developing hand strength for writing. This work gives students a sense of accomplishment while they experience the physical effort behind the process that connects their classroom learning directly to their families at home… especially if they enjoy coffee.
